When did I start to realize something was wrong with how I ate?
Back in the 70’s my uncle, who was 7 years older and really cool, was going to ecology rallies and into the whole peace, love, and happiness that was going on at the time. I overheard him talking with some of his friends about the animals that were our meat products and how they were treated and killed. It did not sound very honorable to me.
Then I stopped by his shop one day after school and he had some Morning Star bacon alternative. I liked it and starting thinking about my food. A few years after that I was given a copy of Frances Moore Lappe’s book “Diet for a Small Planet”. What I read really made sense to me.
Then my beautiful and precious daughter was born. I wanted to feed her the best possible way that I knew. After breastfeeding, I made her baby food. As she got older and I was exposed to more about how our diet and foods came to be, I decided to switch us to a plant-based diet. Over the years, just as Frances discovered, I realized you really do not need to combine foods in order to get enough protein in a plant based diet. Just eat with variety and stay away from processed foods, junk foods, white flour and sugar as much as possible.
Over time I have come to learn what my body does and doesn’t need. The key is learning how to listen.
How do you know what to eat at restaurants?
Great question
It’s a hard one if I’m ordering something even salad I ask “are there any meat or meat based products in this”. In this country pork is a big deal. People like the bacon- in seafood, salads, breads etc….If your question deals with protein, I don’t worry about it :)It’s one meal. Thanks for the question.
